Wear a Word Winners for World Book Day

Wear a Word Winners for World Book Day

World book day is a staple in the academic calendar with children across the country dressing as their favourite characters and having lots of fun.

The idea behind the annual event is to support children to improve their reading skills in fun & innovative ways.

This year the students at Thongsley Fields Primary & Nursery School were planning on holding a ‘Wear A Word Day’ instead of a character costume to get the children’s minds working in a different way. The idea was you choose a word & then find the most imaginate way to dress as that word using your own unique interpretation.

During a visit to the school to discuss exciting future plans for linking with the home when we are opened, Chip (our Customer Relations Manager) also happened to meet the owners of local bookstore Niche Comics. They were in the school helping the children to use their free book tokens as part of World Book Day. They also echoed the headteachers passion about how the passionate the school is about reading & this was the moment Chip knew we had to get involved.

A plan was hatched & book tokens were purchased from Niche Comics (to ensure that we were keeping it local of course!) with the idea to award a winner from each of the 8 school years.

Well! We were completely blown away by how engaged the children were & the standard of interpretation was astounding across all of the year groups.

Winners were chosen & prizes were awarded one by one, with the children looking so proud of their costumes & how they had embraced the words that had been chosen. Chip has also managed to secure some additional support for the school from The Chase & will be purchasing a number of books for the school collectively to add into the reading library. I wonder if we can get the residents of The Chase to join in with Thongsley Fields School next year for their World Book Day Fun? Watch this space…
